Other Info | On October 22 & 23, 2021, The Tiptons Sax Quartet will premiere their new multimedia project Mujer o Bruja? (Woman or Witch?) at the Chapel Performance Space in Seattle, in collaboration with award-winning Latin American music duo Correo Aereo and digital artist Jing ‘Jude’ Dai. Through music, large screen imagery and storytelling, this project will illuminate ancient cosmology and history honoring original feminine principles found worldwide. Known as “GYLANY”, this is a partnership society with balanced feminine/masculine principles, with a direct, responsive and responsible connection with the cosmos, nature and the web of life. We will then contrast these principles with the pervasive “ANDROCRACY”, or patriarchal systems which replaced them, focusing on the ongoing atrocities on the Mexican / American border. Those atrocities include the separation of children from their families, the inhuman criminalization and detention of immigrants and refugees, and the militarization of ICE and police. The piece will also honor examples of women and men throughout history who have worked to restore the balance. We will tell the story of Leydy Pech, the beekeeper of Mayan origin who was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2020 for her work against the planting of transgenic soybeans in the Yucatán Peninsula. This exciting new piece is directed by Madeleine Sosin, and includes the work of digital artist Jing ‘Jude’ Dai who is creating the projected images. Mujer o Bruja will be be featured in the Earshot Jazz Festival, and is co-sponsored by Nonsequitur as part of their Wayward Music Series. It is funded in part by an award from 4Culture (King County, Washington). |
